Over 28,000 acres burned from wildfire in Nebraska panhandle

Nebraska Emergency Management has provided an update to the South Fork Fire, as crews battle steep terrain to minimize the damage.As of Friday afternoon, the fire has burned 28,067 acres and is currently 7% contained. According to Nebraska Emergency Management, strong winds have continued to drive the fire northward into heavier fuels within the Soldier Creek Wilderness area, resulting in increased smoke production from that portion of the fire.The agency says those crews are actively working to strengthen and secure fire lines while limiting fire spread through lighter, more receptive fuels.Nebraska Emergency Management also says areas surrounding Crawford and Fort Robinson are in good condition with limited fire activity. Firefighters continue to strengthen and secure areas around structures.On Wednesday, Gov. Jim Pillen issued an emergency declaration to provide state resources for firefighting efforts in the area, as well as for two other wildfires that broke out in May in Dawes County.
