Food Bank for the Heartland launches summer hunger campaign with Baker’s donation drive
Organization says summer months create added strain for families as children lose access to school meals
OMAHA, Neb. —
As food insecurity continues to rise across Nebraska and western Iowa, Food Bank for the Heartland partnered with Baker’s to help families struggling during the summer months.
The Food Bank hosted a “Stuff the Truck” event Friday afternoon at the Baker’s location near 173rd and Center as part of its Summer Hunger campaign.

Stephanie Sullivan with Food Bank for the Heartland says many people associate food insecurity with the winter months, but summer can be one of the most difficult times for families in need.
“The summer is actually one of the hunger seasons,” Sullivan said. “Kids are out of school, and they’re no longer receiving access to free reduced breakfast and lunch.”
The organization says rising costs for groceries, rent and fuel are also putting additional pressure on families already struggling to make ends meet.
Throughout June, the Food Bank is also hosting its annual Strike Out Hunger campaign, a community-wide effort aimed at providing 400,000 meals for families across its 93-county service area.
Officials say some of the most needed items right now include canned proteins such as tuna, chicken and salmon, along with boxed meals and peanut butter.
People who want to donate can drop off non-perishable food items in orange donation bins located inside Baker’s stores throughout June.
