Endangered species returns to Omaha zoo for first time in more than 30 years

Zookeepers say this species can grow up to 6 feet long.

OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announced a new addition Monday.

The zoo shared on social media that “Reishi,” a Chinese giant salamander, can be found in the Mahoney Kingdoms of the Night exhibit in the Desert Dome. It’s the first time this endangered species can be seen at the Omaha zoo in more than 30 years.

Zookeepers say the world’s largest amphibian can grow up to six feet long. “Reishi” currently weighs 30 pounds.

Guests can see the salamander for themselves in the wet cave across from the fruit bats.
