Video shows the moment a baby was tossed from a burning home and into the hands of a law enforcement officer waiting below.It happened May 15 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as rescue crews rushed to a reported fire at a two-story home in the 1200 block of Washington Avenue.Crews arriving at the scene found fire engulfing the porch of the home. A mother and her young child were trapped on the second floor. Body camera video released by first responders shows a mother gripping her baby as she leaned out the second-floor window. Smoke billowed from the home.”Hey, ma’am! Hey, throw me your kid!” Kalamazoo Public Safety officer Michael Arnett yelled, standing just below the window.The mother drops the child into Arnett’s arms, and the child was taken to a nearby equipment operator. Firefighters were then able to deploy a ground ladder, allowing the mother to safely escape moments later.No injuries were reported. All other occupants of the home were able to safely evacuate. Arnett has been called a hero after authorities released body camera video of the incident.”So I knew the first thing I would do was get all the occupants out of the house. Property can be replaced. Obviously lives can’t,” Arnett said in the aftermath. “The only exit and entry was fully involved, so obviously that wasn’t an option.”The two-story home was badly damaged in the fire, officials said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
