A block of ice smashed through a windshield early Saturday in New Hampshire, sending shards of glass into the passenger side of a car and injuring a woman inside. “It came down from the bridge as soon as we came out from that overpass,” said Dawn Harsh, who was riding in the front passenger seat. “It struck just as we came right into the light.” Harsh said she was on her way to her twin grandsons’ birthday party when the ice crashed through the windshield.”It sounded like it was a very big, like, crash coming through the window. And with the ice, it was a loud impact,” she said. Henniker police responded and investigated where the ice may have come from. “I looked at the bridge, and I looked at the fencing. There seemed to be some gaps, so I’m not entirely sure if it came from the bridge,” said Officer Hayley Minahen of the Henniker Police Department. “Could have possibly come from a vehicle on 114, but we aren’t entirely sure.”Harsh retrieved items from her Kia SUV in a tow yard on Sunday morning, including presents for her grandchildren. She was treated at a local hospital and released. She said she continues to experience pain from several injuries.”Very, very sore. I am bruised on my whole chest area — my abdomen, my face, inside of my mouth, neck,” she said. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation said its crews inspected the bridge. “At this time, there is no indication of an ongoing concern for motorists,” the NHDOT said in a statement. Harsh said she hopes the incident serves as a reminder to keep roadways safe, especially during the winter. “I’m hoping for, in general, for everybody that we can make our roadways safer and make sure that those are maintained, especially in a big winter like we’ve had this year,” she said. She also urged drivers to clear snow and ice from their vehicles to help prevent similar incidents.
